Mt Herzl as an attempt to create an Israeli collective memory
Assaf Boker, M.A
Mt. Herzl is Israel's national cemetery, similar to Arlington for the USA. On this mountain we will find the tombs of Israel's famous leaders such as Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres together with less known stories of Israeli soldiers who have sacrificed their lives in Israel's wars and armed conflicts. But, this mountain is more than the stories of the leaders of the fallen soldiers. This mountain was built as an attempt to create a new and fresh collective and Israeli collective memory for the young born state. In our tour we will learn both about the history of the leaders and the attempt of creating a new Israeli collective identity and memory focused on this mountain.
